Brünnstein Excursion Destination

Brünnstein – Oberaudorf’s local mountain

An easy hike with a short but fun via ferrata.

Base:
Brünnsteinhaus (1,360 m), telephone +49 8033 – 1431, open and staffed almost year-round.

The popular Brünnstein rises like a daring rocky outcrop above its densely wooded surroundings and, when viewed from Oberaudorf, dominates the mountain panorama to the west.

We recommend the approach from the Feuriger Tatzelwurm inn, as from here you hike through a charming gorge above the guesthouse.

However, the more scenic backdrop (at least in the upper part of the tour) is offered by the route from Oberaudorf, as it leads you more or less directly towards Brünnstein and the Brünnsteinhaus below; and for most hikers, that is certainly worth a photo.

Overall, the approaches are quite similar: you hike on comfortable, well-signposted forest paths up to the level of the Brünnsteinhaus, and then walk the last stretch on fairly level ground to the Brünnsteinhaus. From the Brünnsteinhaus there is an easy normal route and the Julius Mayr Route to the summit. As a rule, you will combine these two options into a circular route, meaning you first follow the signs to the Julius Mayr Route rather than those to Brünnstein.

After the hut, you follow a steeply ascending forest path up several switchbacks until you reach a fairly narrow rock cleft. This cleft marks the start of the via ferrata and is also its main highlight. From there, you continue upwards, always well secured, on steps and a few footholds.
After half an hour of enjoyable via ferrata climbing, you reach the summit. There is a small summit chapel there, from which you can also see the normal route, which you then use for the descent.

The Waller family and the Keindl team wish you an enjoyable hike.
